In May 2025, a new law was enacted that prohibits students from using non-school issued internet-enabled devices during the school day while on school grounds. The law applies to all school districts, Boards of Cooperative Educational Services, and charter schools, including Brooklyn Urban Garden Charter School (BUGS).
BUGS has been a leader in the cell-phone-free schools movement. BUGS original cell phone policy was developed in consultation with BUGS stakeholders, including school leadership and staff, parents and students, well prior to this law being enacted. BUGS is updating and clarifying its policy to align more closely with the law, however, no substantive changes to the policy or its enactment are being made or are anticipated.
Here is the BUGS Personal Technology/Cell Phone Policy*.
